Brunch usually means relaxing with the girls and mimosas - but it can also mean lots of empty calories. However, a great brunch doesn't have to break your diet. Here are 5 ideas to make your brunch healthier while still being fun and Instagram-worthy.
1. Choose a Breakfast Burrito
Although they don't sound elegant, breakfast burritos can be colorful and super flavorful. Substitute a breakfast burrito for the usual unhealthy pancakes and bacon. Fill your burrito with eggs, tomatoes, avocado, and black beans, chickpeas, or tofu. Use a whole grain or spinach tortilla to get the most nutrition out of your yummy brunch burrito.
Eat a Parfait Instead of a Pastry
Yogurt and granola parfaits are a great source of protein x and can be made as healthy as you want. A few spoonfuls of low fat organic granola and chopped nuts will give your brunch a crunch without costing you too many calories. Plain Greek yogurt will make your parfait tangy and smooth. Add mango, strawberries, pineapple, papaya, and all of your favorite fresh fruits to make your parfait delicious and nutritious.
Substituting one mimosa for a cup of tea will save you around 120 calories and keep you energetic and alert for brunch. If you don't want to give up your classy brunch drink, then drink a full glass oftea before brunch in order to make yourself feel fuller and start the meal right. Keep your tea beside your plate at all times to stay hydrated.
Switch Up Your Eggs
Instead of sunny side up or scrambled eggs, which can be made with a lot of butter or oil, try poached eggs (boiled in water). If you want the scrambled eggs feel, just scramble up a few egg whites for the same great texture and protein, but much fewer calories and cholesterol. Add paprika or red pepper flakes for extra flavor without adding calorie rich cheese or Hollandaise sauce.
Eat Your Greens
Put some kale in your smoothie or add spinach to your egg white omelet. Order a quiche with zucchini or use fresh cucumber slices in place of toast squares. Add lime or mint to your water for an extra pop of flavor in every sip. If you see something green at brunch, go for it! Fill up on greens and treat yourself with smaller portions of the higher calorie foods.
